The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released its postgraduate medical seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27, detailing the distribution of seats across various medical specialties in India. This matrix is part of a larger allocation of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM, and MCh medical seats announced earlier by the NMC on September 29.

The matrix lists 377 D.M. Neurology, 426 M.Ch. Neurosurgery, 26 D.M. Neuro-Anaesthesia, and 1 D.M. Neuro-Radiology seats across medical colleges nationwide. These figures reflect the current distribution and do not account for pending applications seeking increased intake or new courses for 2026-27.

D.M. Neurology Seats

Tamil Nadu leads with 84 seats, followed by Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with 40 seats each. Karnataka has 31 seats, while Andhra Pradesh has 24. Telangana and Kerala have 22 seats each, and West Bengal has 19. These seats are spread across 20 states and Union Territories, highlighting the broad availability of this specialty. Maharashtra has 16 seats, Odisha 14, Delhi 13, Madhya Pradesh 11, and Punjab 9. Uttarakhand has 8 seats, Gujarat 6, and Assam and Bihar have 5 seats each. Jammu and Kashmir has 4 seats, while Goa and Meghalaya have 2 seats each.

D.M. Neuro-Anaesthesia and Neuro-Radiology

Delhi has the highest number of D.M. Neuro-Anaesthesia seats with 6, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana with 4 seats each. This specialty is offered in 8 states and Union Territories, reflecting its specialized nature. Tamil Nadu has the only D.M. Neuro-Radiology seat, making it the rarest specialty in the matrix with just 1 available seat.

M.Ch. Neurosurgery Seats

Telangana leads with 52 M.Ch. Neurosurgery seats, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 45 and Rajasthan with 41. Maharashtra has 38 seats, Andhra Pradesh 35, and Karnataka 34. These seats are distributed across 23 states and Union Territories, ensuring wider access to neurosurgical training. Madhya Pradesh has 29 seats, Delhi 26, Tripura 25, Kerala 22, West Bengal 18, Odisha 14, and Gujarat 12. Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir have 6 seats each.

Assam, Bihar, and Jharkhand have 4 seats each, while Punjab and Uttarakhand have 3 seats each. Chandigarh and Goa have 2 seats each, and Puducherry has 1 seat. This distribution ensures that neurosurgical training is available in a majority of states, though the numbers vary significantly.
